Medical Guidelines
A medical guideline (also referred to as a clinical guideline, or a clinical protocol) can be defined as a document with the intent of helping to guide decisions and identify criteria regarding diagnosis, management, and treatment of a specific medical condition. Medical guidelines are often based on an examination of current evidence within the paradigm of evidence-based medicine.
Additional objectives of medical guidelines are:
- to help standardize medical care,
- to raise the quality of care provided, and
- to reduce risk (particularly to the patient & the health care provider)
It has been widely accepted that the use of guidelines by health care providers is an effective way of achieving these objectives. The clinical guidelines provided in this section briefly identify, summarize and evaluate the best evidence and most current data concerning the prevention, diagnosis, prognosis and therapy for the condition described.
